PULMOCEF® Cefuroxime axetil USP 250 / 500

Antibiotics

 Composition:
Each film coated tablet contains Cefuroxime axetil USP          equivalent to Cefuroxime 250/500mg
Pharmacology and indications:
Pulmocef is a broad spectrum cephalosporin antibiotic indicated for the treatment of patients with mild to moderate infections caused by susceptible strains of bacteria.

  1. Pharingitis/Tonsillitis
  2. Otitis media
  3. Sinusis
  4. Acute  & chronic bronchitis
  5. Uncomplicated skin and skin structure infections
  6. Uncomplicated urinary tract infections
  7. Uncomplicated Gonorrhoea, urethral and endocervical

Contraindications:
Pulmocef is contraindicated in patients with known allergy to cephalosporin group of antibiotics.
Side effects:
Hypersensitivity reactions like anaphylaxis, angioedema, pruritus, rash, serum sickness- like reaction and urticaria.
Others are pseudomembranous colitis, hepatitis, jaundice, seizure, stephens-johnson syndrome and renal dysfunction.
Drug interactions:
Concomitant administration of probenecid with cefuroxime axetil tablets increases the area under the serum concentration versus time curve by 50%. Drug that reduce gastric acidity lower the bioavailability of  cufroxime axetil.
Use in pregnancy and lactations:
There are no adequate and well- controlled studies in pregnant women thus drug should only be used during pregnancy if clearly needed.
During treatment with cefuroxime axetil, consideration should be given to discontinuing nursing temporally since the drug is known to be excreted in the breast milk.
Dosage and administration:
The dose range between 250mg two times daily for 5 – 10 days to 1000mg once daily depending on the type and severity of infection.
